Obedience is better than Sacrifice (I Samuel 15:10-23)
Obedience means is “doing of what is commend”
Sacrifice means is “something given up in the interests of another”, (offer up, to give up)
Saul disobeyed God’ command, Elsewhere in the Bible it says if we break one of God’ commandments, we have broken all. (James 2:10) As Christian, we also disobey God, which means we broke God’s commands. (To apply this passage of scripture in ourselves, do not mean that we are allowed to kill people by our Lord’ name. But to kill our wrong thinking, thoughts, wrong attitude in our lives that are displeasing to God).
1. Caring for a lost for brother (10-16)
(A) Samuel genuinely concerned for Saul, how did he show his concern?
I. He was deeply moved and cried to the Lord all night for Soul. (Have we ever cared or cried enough for our brothers in Christ who have gone wrong, by praying for him all night?
II. He rose up early the next morning, and then he went to look for Saul. (When a brother
Sinned you, do we just pray for him and do nothing? Do we wait for him to come to
us?
III. Samuel told Saul what God had said (16)
(When we counsel to a brother who is sinned to us, some time we tend beat him, some time we tend impulse him base on our own ideas). But the Bible does not teach us in this way. Here, the most importance thing is to tell him what God says in His word.
(B) I. When Samuel found Saul, what was Saul reaction, (13) ( Saul lied)
II. When Samuel pressed him, what was Saul second reaction? (15) Shift the blame to somebody else.
III. In what way we are like Saul? When we have sinned and are being confronted (we try to rationalize, produce alibis, make excuses, etc…)
2. Obedience is better then scarify (17-23)
(a) What were the possible reasons that Saul disobeyed God?
I. He loved worldly things. (For example, keeping the Oxen, etc)
II. He has a pride (for example, keeping Agag as a trophy), means memorial of victory.
III. He was trying to please man instead of God (21)
IV. Wrong view. (Of God) he may think that God preferred his scarify. And also he may thought that he is really obeying God’ commandment by doing that (21)
(b) Which is more important ( obedience or scarifying) (22)
I. Some of us, we cheat on taxes, than give more offering in church.
II. Some of us, we disobey God in certain area of our lives, and than trying to make up by serving in the church or fellowship.
(c) Since Saul was a human being (all human beings inevitably sins) why was God
seemingly so harsh in dealing with Saul (23).
I. Saul was a king at that time, the higher position, the greater the responsibility (to whom must is given, of him shall must be required, Luke, 12:48)
II. When Saul confronted by Samuel, He repeatedly insisted that he did not do wrong.
Contrast, King David, who was committed adultery and murder, but when he was confronted by Prophet Nathan, immediately he has confessed and he asked God for forgiveness.
(d) What are the reasons that we disobey God? (Why do we often disobey God even though we know it is wrong?)
(e) How can we learn to obey moment by moment?
All of us we should be like Prophet Samuel, who genuinely concerned for fallen brother, bringing God word. Today, but all of us are like King Saul. We just obey God only initially, with a certain area of in our lives. Lets us ask ourselves that whether we are obeying God’s word or not. Please be reminded obeying is better than scarifying.
